Bridging the Business Continuity and IT Disaster Recovery Gap

Brian Zawada & Dustin Mackie, Avalution  |  Friday, October 14, 2016  |  11:00AM - 12:00PM  |  Continuity Insights New York 2016

Although most organizations have been performing elements of IT disaster recovery for years, it is still common for organizations to struggle to ensure alignment between IT capabilities and business application recovery needs. Even if IT exercises run flawlessly and meet planned recovery capabilities, organizations still often realize that gaps remain between the business requests and IT committed capabilities. This can inhibit organizations from having effective (yet reasonable) strategies in place that meet all stakeholder expectations.

This divide typically occurs because organizations lack the necessary structures to facilitate open dialogue between IT, business continuity practitioners, business representatives, and executive leadership. Once the business impact analysis is complete, IT gets a list of recovery objectives with the instructions “this is what the business needs”, whether capabilities exist or not. Organizations often do not take the next step to analyze and estimate gap closure costs and present the information to executive management for review, approval, and investment (or risk acceptance). Where risk is accepted and no gap closure actions are taken, affected business representatives often are not notified that gaps still exist.

This presentation will explore potential methods organizations can execute to help all groups in the IT disaster recovery process understand each other’s intent, priorities, dependencies, needs, and considerations, as well as the impacts of system downtime. These methods seek to truly synchronize BC and IT DR by enabling ongoing discussion, understanding and insight, continued coordination, and communication. Taking such measures will ensure an effective IT disaster recovery program that meets the expectations of all stakeholders.

Practitioner’s Guide to Organizational Resilience

Brian Zawada, Avalution  |  Monday, September 19, 2016  |  4:15PM - 5:15PM  |  DRJ Fall World 2016

This presentation will focus on what resilience means to organizations, and how resilience as an outcome is providing businesses all over the world with a new goal to pursue. It is no longer sufficient to plan, respond and recover from incidents, resilience is about how we manage change, how we might anticipate this change and then respond in a way that will enable us to survive the impact from disruptive events as well as take opportunities to thrive in a potentially new and unfamiliar environment. This session will examine the question of how will this new way of thinking impact on us as professionals? Research is underway to examine how our roles are changing and who within the organization will be impacted. What does organizational resilience mean for business continuity practitioners?

Modern-Day Business Continuity Planning: More than ‘Just a Plan’  |  DRJ Webinar

Michael Bratton & TJ Heginbotham, Avalution  |  Wednesday, August 3, 2016  |  2:00PM - 3:00PM ET |  Watch On-Demand

What constitutes effective business continuity for an organization? Many would argue that effective business continuity begins and ends with great plan documentation – we disagree. Recognizing that plans assist with the response to a disruption and the recovery of business activities and resources, they are just one ingredient in the development of an effective business continuity program and capability.

As the business landscape is becoming increasingly complex and rapidly changing, developing plans without a true understanding of the business’ needs, obligations, and strategic direction is no longer sufficient to deal with the spectrum of availability-related risks. With stakeholder expectations for business continuity being more stringent than ever and customer inquiries becoming more common place, it’s critical to ensure that you’re building a set of response and recovery capabilities that result in a truly prepared and resilient organization.

Join Michael Bratton and TJ Heginbotham from Avalution Consulting as they:

  • Explore the importance of attacking the business continuity problem with a top-down approach that results in the implementation of a program the “right way”;
  • Highlight strategic approaches and recommendations for each phase of the business continuity planning lifecycle that will make your planning effort more effective; and
  • Share insights, advice, and lessons learned for building business continuity capabilities that result in truly prepared and resilient organizations.

Bill DiMartini & Michael Bratton, Avalution  |  Sunday, March 13, 2016  |  4:00PM - 5:00PM  |  DRJ Spring World 2016

Many organizations design IT Disaster Recovery solutions like they’re booking a one-way flight – able to get to their destination but without a plan on how they’ll get back home. Even if plans include procedures to return to the restored data center, many times they are rarely tested and validated. This session is for you if: you are responsible for the development and maintenance of your organization’s IT Disaster Recovery Plan or are responsible for auditing IT Disaster Recovery Programs.

Effectively Communicating Enterprise-Wide Business Continuity to Senior Management and Stakeholders, FFIEC and Appendix J

Two Part Workshop  |  Brian Zawada, Avalution & Susan Rogers, CyberWise  |  Tuesday, October 20, 2015  |  1:45PM - 3:45PM  |  CI New York 2015

Part 1: Does Your Bank Meet the Expectations Summarized in FFIEC Appendix J?

Brian Zawada  |  1:45PM - 2:30PM

Many business continuity professionals use the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (FFIEC) booklets as guides not only to assess the quality of their programs, but to help to drive continual improvement of governance and planning processes. The 2015 publication of FFIEC BC Booklet contains a challenging set of expectations to manage the risk associated with Technology Service Providers (TSPs). This session will not only summarize the key components of Appendix J, but the audience will also be presented with an approach to help identify the barriers and operational activities needed to set realistic time frames for working toward Appendix J compliance.

Part 2: Lessons Learned From FFIEC BC Booklet, Appendix J

Susan Rogers  |  2:45PM - 3:45PM

We depend on Suppliers and Third Parties to manage and support our critical functions and systems. These third-parties are so critical and yet we have little control over their operational practices. In this session, the audience will learn about the 2015 publication of the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (FFIEC) BC examination booklet and its Appendix J guidance on Third-Party Oversight. Feedback from regulatory examinations will be shared. Practices to simplify the vendor questionnaire and review process will be discussed. Lessons learned will include Third-party risk mitigation points the BC leader can bring back to their organization and share with their operation groups and business leaders.

Michael Bratton, Avalution  |  Tuesday, October 13, 2015  |  1:00PM - 2:00PM  |  BRPA Educational Event

By their very nature, crises are extraordinary events that can represent a significant strain on any organization. Whether they occur in the form of a natural disaster or social media outrage, some organizations are better at managing these types of events than others. This presentation will explore examples of successful (and unsuccessful) reactions to crisis events and examine the characteristics and traits of those organizations that are able to not only weather these types of events, but improve and thrive following a crisis.

Build an ISO 22301 Management System to Capture Executive Attention

Workshop  |  Brian Zawada, Avalution  |  Tuesday, September 29, 2015  |  3:00PM - 5:30PM  |  DRJ Fall World 2015

Management systems concepts have been included in nearly every business continuity standard written in the last six years – including ISO 22301 – but remain relatively unknown in our profession. This workshop will introduce management systems processes and their unique benefit of forcing/enabling alignment with your executives’ and customers’ expectations. Management systems processes include defining scope and objectives, engaging management and other interested parties, identifying business continuity obligations, documenting a policy, establishing personnel competencies, performing recurring internal audits and management reviews, managing corrective actions – and above all, continual improvement.

Workshop attendees will come away with an understanding of management systems principles and processes, as well as the value of management system standards. Each management system component and process will be introduced using examples and case study content, as well as specific, practical ways to implement these processes in any environment.

Designing a Business Continuity Training Program to Maximize Value & Minimize Cost

Brian Zawada, Avalution  |  Recorded: July 21, 2015  |  BrightTALK Business Continuity Planning & Risk Management Summit   |   Watch On-Demand

Training is an absolutely vital component of any business continuity program; however, employees (ranging from executives to the general employee population) are often unaware of the existence of the program or, worse, their role within the business continuity effort. This lack of awareness increases the chance that your program will fall flat when it matters most. So how do you fix this (keeping in mind resource, time, and budget constraints)?

During this presentation, Brian will explore:

  • Best practices in developing business continuity training programs and common pitfalls to avoid;
  • Content delivery methods and solutions to fit your audience while controlling costs; and
  • How to build the right training program to deliver significant value across your entire organization.

Using the BCI’s Good Practice Guidelines for Program Development and Maturation

Brian Zawada  |  Wednesday, June 10, 2015  |   2:15PM - 3:00PM  |  Gartner Security & Risk Management Summit

To initiate the development of your business continuity program or to assess your current program, we focus on the six professional practices that form the Good Practices Guidelines (GPG) from the Business Continuity Institute (BCI). These comprehensive guidelines, aligned to ISO 22301, were developed by business continuity professionals and focus not only on the “what to do” but also answer the “why, how and when.” The BCI will introduce you to management and technical practices that can drive the development of your business continuity program.

Creating a Business Continuity Program that Resonates with Management

Using a Management System to Connect Your Program to the Bottom Line

Michael Bratton & Kirk Kinsey, Avalution  |  Wednesday, May 13, 2015  |  CPO Joint Regions Meeting

Too often, business continuity professionals execute program activities without having a well-defined sense of management’s expectations (and equally bad, they don’t give thought to the language and issues that resonate with management), resulting in a program that fails to align to organizational goals and objectives. As a result, business continuity practitioners appear as though they do not understand business expectations and obligations. This session will outline how business continuity professionals can use a management systems approach to properly align program design and planning activities with management expectations in order to create buy-in and drive continual improvement.

What Happens After the Business Impact Analysis?

Webinar  |  Brian Zawada (Avalution) & Trevor Mickelson (Agility)  |  April 30, 2015  |  2:00PM - 3:00PM ET  |  Watch On-Demand

So many organizations focus on the business impact analysis (BIA), and rightfully so. When done right, the BIA provides management-endorsed business continuity requirements ranging from downtime tolerances to resource requirements. But, what’s next? How can you leverage the results of the BIA to improve preparedness for a disruptive incident?

Join Agility and Avalution to discuss two BIA “next steps”, including the business continuity gap analysis and strategy selection. The presenters will discuss gaps and strategies specific to alternate workspace, staffing requirements, equipment, supply chains, and information technology. Join us for this important overview of how to transition from determining business continuity requirements to strategy identification and selection.

Safeguard Your Organization with PS-Prep

BSI Webinar  |  November 12, 2014  |  2:00PM - 3:00PM ET  |  Register

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) established a voluntary private sector preparedness accreditation and certification program called PS-Prep. Designed to enhance preparedness and give private sector entities the ability to safeguard their organizations against all-hazards, PS-Prep includes standards that equip decision-makers with best practices to improve their organizations’ abilities to maintain operations leading up to, and after, an emergency or disaster.

Recently, DHS announced changes to its list of adopted standards that serve as PS-Prep’s foundation. The most widely used and only international standard recognized is ISO 22301, which replaces BS-25999-2. This opens the door for global organizations to work under one rule and apply for a PS-Prep accreditation stamp where applicable without the need to repeat the full assessment cycle.

The PS-Prep Program is in full swing and organizations that wish to make a positive statement about their state of preparedness and compliance to the standards can do so under the global guidelines that have always been followed under ISO 22301.

Join us for a complimentary webinar on November 12, 2014 at 2:00PM as experts in the field of PS-Prep development, accreditation, and assessment come together to discuss the program and answer your questions on the assessment and certification process. Attendees will learn:

  • The history of PS-Prep
  • The assessment process
  • Self-declaration protocol for small business
  • The business and societal benefits
  • Case study and comments from an ISO 22301 certified organization

During the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to share experiences and challenges that they have faced in developing metrics. Selling the Business Continuity Case to Executive Management

Tuesday, March 21, 2013  |  9:00AM - 11:00AM  |  Chicago Chapter of the International Facility Management Association (IFMA)

Getting management to understand what you already know regarding the importance of business continuity can be difficult. You can list example after example of catastrophic disasters around the world, but they still may not see the value. This doesn’t mean executives don’t “get it”, they just have to be able to understand the business case to justify investment and prioritize preparedness over other projects. Some of the most important factors in getting management to buy in to business continuity are speaking their language and focusing on what’s most important and strategic to them. Documentation, plans, analysis doesn’t resonate – but when you can relate business continuity to management’s concerns and values – and especially customers and the marketplace – it becomes much easier to get their interest, buy in, and investment. This presentation will:

  • Discuss specific ways to change your approach to help you engage your leaders
  • Enable you to develop a business case that warrants investment
  • Help you "sell the business continuity case to executive management"
